Section 64 of the Canadian Electrical Code covers renewable energy systems and asks for permanent marking at disconnects, interconnection points and storage equipment. It does not tell you what to make the label out of.
ESA Bulletin 64-5-4 does: labels must withstand the elements and stay permanent and legible — “for example: lamacoid, engraved metal plate, or equivalent.” Printed adhesive fades and curls on a south wall. Engraving cuts the legend through the top ply into a contrasting core, so the text is the material.

Does the Canadian Electrical Code require lamacoid labels on a solar install?
No — not by name. ESA Bulletin 64-5-4 Q7/A7 says labels must withstand the elements and be permanent and legible, and gives lamacoid, engraved metal plate, or equivalent as examples. Lamacoid is an accepted example, not a mandate. Manitoba Hydro is the one utility that names the product outright: its Informative Bulletin 64-0 states that all solar photovoltaic labels are required to be engraved lamacoids, red background with white lettering.
How many labels does a residential solar install actually need?
A grid-tied Ontario house with microinverters and no storage typically needs about 15 distinct labels across 22 pieces — roughly 228 square inches. A string inverter with battery storage takes that to about 26 labels across 38 pieces. Four plates is not a code-complete install.
What colour do solar labels have to be in Canada?
CEC Rule 64-200 specifies white lettering on a red background for the photovoltaic warning sign, with a minimum capital height of 9.5 mm. That is the only Section 64 rule that fixes both a colour and a letter height. Utility standards override it in places: BC Hydro fixes its DG System Disconnect identifiers at black on white, and Toronto Hydro wants meter plates white on black.
